Every client has different needs, so helping your policyholders choose the right supplement plan starts with listening. Supplement plans are especially helpful for covering things like copayments, deductibles, and coinsurance costs. 

Follow our tips to help your senior clients choose the right supplement plan: 

Meet with your clients and listen to what they need. Communicate early and often to help your seniors choose the right supplement plan. For example, some people are concerned with potential out-of-pocket costs with specialist visits while others are more worried about inpatient care costs. The rising long-term care costs may be of concern to other clients. Listening to your policyholder and their family is the best way to learn what your client needs. Since every person is different, take the time to understand your customer and how you can best help them. 

Research supplement plan options and present them to your client. Do your research to identify the supplement plans available in your area. Learn about the insurance company selling the plan and check out online reviews from other customers. Make sure you understand what the supplement plan offers and how it compares to others on the market. Medigap plans are available in all states and are administered by private insurance companies. If your client has Medicare Part A and B, they can usually enroll in a Medigap plan. If your client already has a Medicare Advantage plan, they are generally not eligible for a Medigap plan. 

Help your client enroll in their supplement plan. Once you and your client have talked about their needs and the plans that could be right for them, help them enroll in the supplement plan of their choice. While usually straightforward, the enrollment process could be confusing for some seniors — and many insurance companies use a digital intake process. As their agent, you can take control and help them with any questions or concerns. 

Follow up with your client to check for satisfaction. After your client has enrolled in their supplement plan of choice, check back in with them to see if they are satisfied. Ask if they have any questions or concerns and if they have been able to access care without issue. If your client is having any difficulties, you may be able to intervene and show them how to get help from their insurance company. Making the call to the insurer together on speakerphone in your office can often help resolve issues immediately.
